Since I previously posted writing samples from the boys, I wanted to showcase Pumpkin’s writing as she recently (at 3) learned to write her name. Although she enjoys practicing her handwriting, at this point my primary focus is on her developing a correct pencil grip.
I am using the Handwriting Without Tears program with each of the children. It is the boys second year using the program. Pumpkin doesn’t use a workbook, but she does use the slate chalk board, lined chalkboard, Roll-a-dough letters, Stamp and see screen, and Capital Wood letters.
I took the 2 day teacher workshop which I highly recommend for anyone who is seriously interested in teaching handwriting. The program was developed by an occupational therapist and can be used easily with preschool age children. Because of this, I am able to teach handwriting together, even if the children work on different skill sets. I only wish I had known about the program when I first began homeschooling. I could have used it and taught letter recognition and phonics simultaneously with handwriting!
