Very impressive! And very cute! I have to ask…do you help out with spelling and punctuation when the kids are writing in their journals, or did they spell and punctuate so perfectly on their own?

They dictate the story to me and I write it down and they copy it. Sometimes they don't copy it well. We started this as a handwriting exercise for them because they finished their Handwriting without Tears book and weren't too thrilled about me ordering another one this year.
If I were doing this as a creative writing assignment I would concentrate on the writing and less on the spelling and punctuation!

I feel much better! When I saw the perfect spelling and all of the great comma usage, I was worried b/c I don't think my second grader could have done as well!
Actually, this year we started the IEW program for writing and we're enjoying it. With my second grader I had him dictate to me and I scribed. He has recently sat down to write some of his own short stories in a picture journal. There were some spelling errors, but I've learned from the author of IEW that the writing and spelling parts of the brain aren't in the same place so it takes a while for someone learning to write to incorporate all the spelling rules they've learned.
I think you are doing a great job with your kids! You are to be commended.
BTW, I live in your home state!
